Scidmore, Eliza Ruhamah: CHINA. The Long-lived Empire. New York, 1900. xv, 466 pp. 50 plates (incl. tinted frontispiece) and numerous text illustrations. 21x14 cm. Decorative cloth, somewhat grubby.
Imperialist China at the end of the nineteenth century as observed by the author of the popular 'Jinrikisha Days in Japan'. Especially good on Beijing, Shanghai and Canton with many acute and memorable bons mots and predictions 'It is not possible to regenerate China as China'. Spine slightly faded, otherwise a very good copy.
