Catalogue of an engrossing exhibition held in the Kremlin in Moscow in late 2019 and early 2020. Examined the intellectual interests and connoisseurship of a pre-eminent Russian monarch, Peter the Great (r.1682-1725). The exhibition in sections: The Treasury of the Russian Monarchs in the Age of Peter the Great; The Grand Embassy - The Great Apprenticeship; Peter the Great's Collections at the Preobrazhenzky Palace; The Collections of Peter the Great. Within these broad themes there are subsections and essays. Two interest us in particular; Menshikova; 'Between the East and West: Peter I's Chinese Collection' and; Korolkova: 'The Collection of Peter the Great and the Beginning of the Exploration of Siberia'. There are many fine and seldom (if ever) exhibited objects testifying to the wealth of the Tsars and the curiosity and intellect of Peter. In addition to European objects, there are interesting Chinese objects from the Ming and early Qing dynasties and fine gold items from ancient Siberian tombs. Other Islamic and Asian material is included.
Of much interest, not least from the perspective of cross-cultural contact.
A total of 232 very fine exhibits in numerous media from the collection of the Kremlin Museums, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and other museums, archives and collections in Moscow and St. Petersburg, together with loans from a few museums abroad. List of contents, captions to plates and one page summary in English. Main text in Russian. Very hard to obtain and now out-of-print.
