YAMBZ1 Yamakawa Shichizaemon: BAISENKYO ZO KOKYO ZUSHU: DAI ICHI SHU. (An Illustrated Compilation of Ancient Mirrors in the Baisenkyo Collection). 梅仙居藏古鏡圖集;第一輯:大刑日本古鏡圖集,日本出土漢式鏡圖集。山川七左衡門 著. Osaka, 1923. Japanese mirrors vol.: 2 pp. text plus 36 full page b/w collotype plates; Chinese-style mirrors vol.: 4 pp. text plus 20 full page b/w collotype plates. 2 vols. 39x30 cm. Stitched, cloth case. GBP 600.00 Luxuriously-produced catalogue of a choice collection of ancient bronze mirrors formed in Japan in the early part of the 20th century. The author and, presumably, collector, Yamakawa Shichizaemon, was, it seems, a member of a prominent and wealthy old Shogun family. One volume illustrates Japanese mirrors, the second shows Chinese mirrors excavated at sites in Japan. Introductions and list of contents to each volume followed by images of mirrors with accompanying descriptions. Descriptions to the Chinese mirrors are lengthy. The mirrors (a total of some 60) are all illustrated actual size. It seems that these two volumes are the one and only part published on the Baisenkyo collection. The first time we have seen this work or heard of this collection. All text in Japanese. In near mint condition. Very rare. Subjects: Bronzes Mirrors Item 674 in List 208.
