WU0SG1 Wu Dacheng: SHUOWEN GU ZHOU BU. (Discussions on Ancient Chinese Characters). 說文古籀補 。 吳大澂 著. Suzhou, 1923. 4, 93; 5, 35 folded leaves. B/w reproductions of ancient characters throughout. 4 vols. 20x13 cm. Stitched. Blue cardboard tao. GBP 200.00 If it was not the first dictionary of Chinese, Xu Shen's 'Shuowen Jiezi' was the first to have provided a standardized collection of script forms, the 'small seal' characters adopted by the unifying First Emperor. Even the 'Shuowen,' however, included some earlier 'great seal' forms (also known as 'zhouwen') and scholars down the ages went on to add further supplements, notably, Wu Dacheng who first produced this 'Shuowen Gu Zhou Bu' in 1883. An important early study of pre-Qin philology. The third printing of this fine lithographic edition first published in 1919 by the unknown (to us) Zhenxin Shuzhuang in Suzhou. All text in Chinese. In fine condition. Rare. Subjects: Dictionaries Item 148 in List 211. URL for this record: hanshan.com/?w/WU0SG1.HTM Record produced by Hanshan Tang Books, www.hanshan.com. |
