WHIAC4 Whitfield, Roderick: THE ART OF CENTRAL ASIA. The Stein Collection in the British Museum. Tokyo, 1982-85. Each volume c.340 pp. 200 colour, 64 b/w illustrations, maps. Bibliography. 3 vols. 38x27 cm. Cloth, boxed. GBP 4,500.00 A deluxe and lavish edition limited to 550 copies. Illustrates the unparalleled collection of Central Asian objects assembled by Aurel Stein on his expeditions along the Silk Road showing, in particular, his stunning finds of Buddhist scrolls, sutras and silk paintings from the hidden library at Dunhuang. Volume 1 covers the earliest paintings in the collection through to, and including many paintings from, the Tang dynasty. Volume 2 continues the coverage of the Tang dynasty and also includes Five Dynasties and Northern Song paintings. Volume 3 is devoted to textiles, sculpture and other arts from Dunhuang. This series represents the first time that the collection has been published since Stein's original archaeological reports of the early twentieth century. Due to the fragility of the objects, it is unlikely they will ever be reproduced again in such a comprehensive manner. The quality of the colour plates shows all objects in unsurpassed clarity and detail and the volumes include many hitherto unpublished photographs of enlarged details and entire works. Subjects: Dunhuang Silk Road Item 658 in List 206. URL for this record: hanshan.com/?w/WHIAC4.HTM Record produced by Hanshan Tang Books, www.hanshan.com. |
