‘Tung Chia’ (Bland, J. O. P.?): LAYS OF FAR CATHAY AND OTHERS. A Collection of Original Poems. Shanghai, 1890. 85 pp. 35 b/w caricatures and drawings. 20x15 cm. Decorative boards. Wear to edges.
GBP 350.00
Published by Kelly & Walsh in Shanghai, directed at, and being about, the foreign community in Far Cathay. 29 poems of a cheerfully amateurish nature written by an expatriate under the pseudonym 'Tung Chia' (apparently J. O. P. Bland) are accompanied by 35 black-and-white caricatures and drawings by the little-known 'H. H.' (H. W. G. Hayter) - presumably a Shanghai resident and the same gentleman who later illustrated Hay's Caricatures. The poems include such gems as: Lines to an Old Chit-Book, The Siesta of Wang Erh, To a Sleeping Rickshaw Collie, Adieu to Peking, Ballade of the Tea Season and much more of an expatriate nature. The illustrations are delightful and show both western and Chinese vignettes. Wear to edges of the decorative boards (on which there are a number of caricature drawings) and the inside front cover is starting to crack at the join with the spine. Rare.
