Volume One: Title page on inside front cover, 3,2,3,3, 3, 2 folded leaves of prefaces etc. plus 23 folded leaves of full page b/w woodblock illustrations; Volume Two: 2 folded leaves preface plus 33 folded leaves full page b/w woodblock illustrations, 2 final folded leaves of postscript. 2 vols. 26x18 cm. Stitched. GBP 500.00 First edition. Complete in two volumes. The work was initiated due to famine in Japan in the 1750s and finalized in 1771 but not published until much later in 1833. Its intent was to inform the populace as to numerous plants which were edible (and which were not!) in times of starvation. Illustrations by Kitago Shomei. Takebe Seian (1712-1782) was apparently from a medical family serving the then-rulers of Japan. All text in Japanese. Scarce. Conforms exactly to the description in Kerlen. Tempyo reign and cyclical date on title page which equates to 1833. From the library of Prof. William Watson. See: Kerlen item 69 on p.31. Bartlett p.414. Marks, abrasion and waterstaining to covers.
