A guide to the Shanghai Museum in the mid-1930s. In three parts: Part I: Anthropology; Part II: Art and Archaeology; Part III: Natural History. Of these, Part III on Natural History is the largest (reflecting the author's main interest) and has sections on Zoology (Verberata and Inverberata), Botany and Geology. Much black-and-white photographic illustration throughout plus a number of colour plates primarily of butterflies and moths. A good number of pleasingly-executed text drawings. Sowerby was the Honorary Director of the Museum at the time of publication. Published by the Royal Asiatic Society Shanghai Branch. Author's dedication with signature on frontpaper. A true period piece. Rare. The first time we have seen this publication. In very good condition. The dustjacket with wear and tear.
