SHM202 Shanghai Museum: BAOLI FENGWU: "HEISHIHAO" CHENCHUAN CHUSHUI ZHENPIN. The Baoli Era: Treasures from the Tang Shipwreck Collection. 寶歷風物 : ‘黑石號’沉船出水珍品. Shanghai, 2020. 304 pp. Colour plates throughout. 30x23 cm. Wrappers. GBP 80.00 Catalogue of an exhibition at the Shanghai Museum exploring the maritime excavation and artefacts recovered from the Beilitung wreck off the coast of Indonesia's Beilitung Island. The ship was a merchant vessel that sunk in the 9th century. It was carrying a cargo of ceramics, gold and silver metalwork and bronze mirrors. It is the largest haul of Tang dynasty artefacts discovered outside China. Many pieces were exhibited at this first showing of the artefacts in China. The wreck is a time capsule that provides a fascinating insight into the demand overseas for Chinese luxury products and the obviously extensive maritime export trade from China at that time. Foreword and captions to plates in English. Main text in Chinese. Subjects: Ceramics Metalwork Item 143 in List 205.
