SANIP1 Sang, Ly Hoi & Alexander, Richard: ILLUSTRIOUS PRIME MINISTERS OF CHINA. Their Ancient Manners, Customs and Philosophies: A Symphony of the Spheres. New York, 1928. B/w frontispiece. 113 pp. 15 pp. full page b/w portraits plus 3 pp. b/w illustrations. 30x22 cm. Decorative boards. GBP 100.00 A rather curious work, privately printed. Reproduces 15 portraits of famous prime ministers of ancient China. The portraits taken from paintings on silk purportedly dating from the Song dynasty and held in the collection of Colonel Horatio Seymour Rubens of New York. A brief biography of each Prime Minister accompanies each portrait. Then follows, rather bizarrely, a journey into Chinese mysticism in the form of a discourse called 'The Ancient Wheels: The Symphony of the Spheres'. Plus drawings of emperors of successive dynasties etc. etc. A distinct period piece, of most interest for the discourse on the Prime Ministers. Subjects: Biography Item 405 in List 210.
