JPWC09 Asai Ryuto (Hakuzan): SODE URA UN'EN. ASAI RYUTO SENSEI. (Clouds and Mist up Your Sleeve). 袖裡雲煙 。 淺井柳塘先生. N.p., 1885. 14 openings, 1 with title, 1 with colophon, 12 with Japanese watercolour landscape sketches. 4.2x3.1 cm. Accordion-style, brocade covered boards, cloth case. GBP 1,300.00 Exquisitely painted, single-artist, miniature album by the Japanese artist, Asai Ryuto (or Hakuzan 1842-1907), dated Meiji 18 or 1885. The second title (giving the artist) is taken from the album label. The tiny paintings are delicate ideal landscapes - kept up one's sleeve, as suggested by the album title, they would provide the perfect visual escape from a 'dusty world' and this was often seen as the function of landscape painting in the literati mode. Asai Hakuzan was a Nanga painter born in Awa province. He studied under the Shijo artist Dodo Hirotoshi, then with the nanga painters Taniguchi Aizan and Nukina Kaioku. He was also known as a poet and calligrapher and later worked in Nagasaki under Kinoshita Itsuun. Roberts, p. 6. The rear board has come loose (but could be easily repaired). Provenance: Julia Parker Wightman collection, with her miniature paper bookplate. Subjects: Painting Item 600 in List 205.
