N.p., 1892. 17 openings: title opening, 10 openings chiefly calligraphic pieces (some with a little decorative imagery), 6 openings chiefly Japanese watercolour paintings (some with descriptive text). 8.6x6.7 cm. Accordion-style, silk brocade covered boards with some wear. GBP 1,700.00 The title above is taken from the album label; the title opening has an alternate title: 'Kozan Ryusui' (High Mountains and Flowing Waters). This Japanese album contains a highly varied collection of poetic texts and paintings by a number of Japanese artists, some individually dated in the 1890s. The title opening is dated 1892, and presumably the album was done as an exercise in artistic interplay and for shared pleasure. The paintings include : bamboo with bamboo sprout; plum branches; a watercolour sketch of boating; a landscape with temple; a pair of crabs; a pine tree; a watercolour landscape with pine tree. All the painting and calligraphy is to a very high standard. Provenance: Julia Parker Wightman collection, with her miniature paper bookplate (possibly one of the seals is also hers).
