GBP 3,500.00 Two marvellous miniature albums of Japanese watercolour paintings by the same artist, uniformly bound. The first album is devoted to famous sites in Kyoto, instantly recognisable to those knowing the city and highly evocative given the supreme economy of expression. The second volume, separately titled, contains paintings of plants, flowers and fruit. The artist is Takeda Motsugai (1795-1867), a Buddhist priest of the Soto Sect as well as haiku poet and calligrapher. He was also a martial arts (jujutsu) expert and had the nickname of 'genkotsu osho' or 'the priest with clenched fists'. Provenance: Julia Parker Wightman collection.
