Kawamura Ukoku: KAWAMURA UKOKU MAMECHO. (Miniature Albums Painted by Kawamura Ukoku). 川村雨谷豆帖. N.p., 1893. 10; 10 openings with monochrome ink paintings. One page with colophon and two seals. 2 vols. 5.7x4 cm. Accordion-style, silk brocade covered boards with with silk brocade covered case.
GBP 3,500.00
A superb collection of miniature Nanga style paintings by Kawamura Ukoku (1838-1906), dated 1893. The 20 paintings are bound into two tiny albums, accordion-style, with a brief final colophon in the second volume. Each painting is an exquisite miniature landscape in the traditional Chinese literati mode and likely implicitly referring to particular masters, even within the limited scope of this 'mamecho' form.
Kamakura Ukoku was a government official in Nagasaki where he studied painting, especially Nanga painting, under Kinoshita Itsuun and Hidaka Tetsuo. He helped to found the Nihon Nanga Kyokai after his retirement in 1898 to concentrate on his painting.
  Provenance: Julia Parker Wightman collection.
Subjects: Painting
