JPWC04 Shunkin: SHUNKIN GACHO. (An Album of Paintings by Shunkin). 春琴畫帖. N.p., n.d. 31 black-and-white paintings. 8.8x4.6 cm. Accordion-style, silk covered boards with wear and rubbing. GBP 5,000.00 By the Japanese painter Uragami Sen, known as Shunkin (1779-1846). Eldest son of Uragami Gyokudo (1745-1821), the famous Japanese literati painter. Studied Chinese Yuan and Ming painting which influenced his work. Collaborated on occasion with Yamamoto Baiitsu. This album shows the influence of the naturalism of the Maruyama school. Shunkin's paintings are in major collections throughout Japan and abroad, including the British Museum. The album contains 31 double page black-and-white paintings measuring 8.8 x 9 cm when opened out. The subject matter includes bamboo, chrysanthemums, orchids and plum blossom. Most of the paintings are accompanied by an often brief calligraphic inscription describing the subject of the painting. The paintings are done in black ink and the ensemble of painting and calligraphy strongly demonstrates the link between painting and calligraphy in Far Eastern painting. The painting is obviously that of an accomplished artist and the calligraphy is strong. The album is not signed but the last blank page of the album bears an unobtrusive seal 'Shunkin'. Unobtrusive and repaired wormhole to the upper quarter of all leaves of the album. Varying degrees of repaired worming to other leaves. Widespread repaired worming to four of the paintings.
