ZZOPQ1 OLD PHOTOGRAPHS OF QINGZHOU, THE SURROUNDING AREA AND CHINESE BUDDHIST ART. N.p. (Qingzhou), n.d. (late 1920s). 102 original b/w photographs. Accompanying lists of images, list of names and places. 25x20 cm. Loose photographs in two boxes. GBP 5,000.00 The photographs are new, developed from original negatives by a professional photography studio specialising in traditional black-and-white images. They are of a size (25x20 cm/10x8 inches) that allows both full appreciation and detailed examination of the image depicted. The negatives from which the images were developed date from the mid/late 1920s and were taken by a British missionary resident in Qingzhou in China's Shandong province. He fortunately numbered and titled every negative. The photographs have been correspondingly numbered on the back and a listing of the images is included. There is practically no available photographic imagery of Qingzhou and its historical sites dating from this time. Given that many of the sites have been destroyed, vandalised or extensively renovated, this photographic archive is a valuable record of a bygone era and also important from an art history perspective. Qingzhou has also proved to be a very important centre of Buddhist worship and Buddhist art as it was here that the famous and stunning find of buried sixth-century Buddhist sculptures was made in 1996, which have subsequently been exhibited worldwide, including at the Royal Academy in London. Indeed, Shandong was the route of the transmission of Buddhism to Korea. The photographs include images of Buddhist statuary and sculpture and of 5th-6th century Buddhist stone grottoes in the area. The area is also steeped in Daoism and there is much Daoist imagery here too. Sites shown include Yunmen Shan, Tuo Shan, the Mosque (Zhenjiao Si) in Qingzhou, Buddhist and Daoist temples in and near Qingzhou, worshippers at temples. Despite much researching in both English and Chinese, no reference can be found to a number of the temples photographed and it must be assumed they have been demolished or destroyed. A fascinating and well-photographed body of work. The photographs are accompanied by a photocopy of the original list of images within the book of negatives, a listing of the photographs using current pinyin transliteration and a list of names and places shedding light on the numerous unusual religious images and unfamiliar places depicted. Images and lists available on request. Subjects: Photography Item 587 in List 207. URL for this record: hanshan.com/?o/ZZOPQ1.HTM Record produced by Hanshan Tang Books, www.hanshan.com. |
