NPM201 National Palace Museum ed: HUANGDI DE DUOBAO GE. Curio Boxes of Qianlong Emperor. 皇帝的多寶格. Taibei, 2020. 199 pp. Colour plates throughout 29x21 cm. Wrappers. GBP 100.00 Catalogue of an exhibition at the National Palace Museum in Taibei examining one of the most sophisticated aspects of imperial connoisseurship, collecting and relaxation - the wonderful curio boxes of the Qianlong emperor. 15 curio boxes containing a total of 619 artefacts were shown. These multitiered boxes are marvellous. The boxes themselves of the highest quality made from painted and inlaid lacquer and fine woods. The fabulous and highly diverse contents of the boxes are then revealed tier by tier and their objects illustrated and described. Includes imperial ceramics, painted albums (some painted to illustrate and describe the contents of a box), exquisite small jades and bronzes and much other variety. The objects date mainly from the Song through to the Qing. The final 'box' is in fact a 'curio shelf' that was located in Yangxin Dian in the Forbidden City. The objects have been reassembled from inventories of the time and, although not displayed on a shelf per se, an idea of the look of the curio shelf can be gained from one of the paintings in the 'Twelve Beauties' series 'Appreciating the Past'. Foreword and captions to plates in English. Main text in Chinese. Recommended. Subjects: Art Connoisseurship Item 551 in List 206.
