Catalogue of an excellent exhibition held at the Nanjing Museum in China exploring foreign contacts and cross-cultural influences during the Ming dynasty. Ranges from the Zheng He maritime missions and envoys bringing tribute from foreign countries through to Jesuit missionaries including Matteo Ricci and central Asian influences. There is even a letter from Queen Elizabeth the First to the Wanli Emperor! An emphasis on Italy - its missionaries, travellers and scholars who journeyed to China in the late Ming. Many fine exhibits ranging from paintings and portraits (both Chinese and western) to books, ceramics, lacquer, glazed tiles. A wide variety. Forewords, introductions to each section and captions in English. Main text in Chinese.
