(c.1800). 27 openings of full page watercolour paintings with accompanying leaves of calligraphy. Two final paintings with no accompanying calligraphy. 31x23 cm. Accordion-style. Modern box. GBP 9,000.00 The paintings measure 25.7 by 19.5 cm and are inset on larger sheets measuring 31 by 23.5 cm. 27 paintings with 27 facing leaves of Chinese calligraphy describing the scene and people depicted. A final two paintings with no accompanying calligraphy. The title slip on the cover is as per the title above and focuses on the lives and customs of the two peoples mentioned, the Miao and the Li - both natives of Guizhou province. Written at the bottom of the title slip is: Kunming Tingyun Lou Zhen Cang - From the Collection of Tingyu Lou in Kunming (see characters above). Tingyu Lou literally translates as 'The Mansion for Listening to the Rain' and would be the studio name for a collector. It is possible that this is one Qian Luhe (1791-1849) who came from the Kunming area and was an official at various places in Yunnan during the period that this album would have been available.
