MULCC1 - NEW BOOK Mullaney, Thomas S: THE CHINESE COMPUTER. A Global History of the Information Age. Cambridge, 2024. 359 pp. Many illustrations throughout. Tables, notes, bibliography, index. 24x16 cm. Cloth. GBP 32.00 A history of Chinese computation gravitating around the development and implicated use of computer input methods for Chinese characters, including some earlier hardware developments (related to Mullaney's previous work on 'The Chinese Typewriter'). Later input methods for Chinese were and are built into most modern computers as "compensatory" software technologies and Mullaney believes that the "mode" of writing practice they require has ushered in a new age [no less] of inscription that he calls the "hypographic age" (where hypo- means "under": a writing that underlies conventional writing). Subjects: Computation Language Item 6 in List 211. URL for this record: hanshan.com/?m/MULCC1.HTM Record produced by Hanshan Tang Books, www.hanshan.com. |
