Absolutely terrific and weighty compilation of predominantly black-and-white photography of the buildings and architecture along the 'sacred' north-south central axis of Beijing. The illustrations date from 1860 through to the mid 20th century. Includes the Forbidden City palace complex and gardens, Tiananmen, Qianmen and the entertainment district and much much more. The axis extends from the Drum and Bell Towers in the North to Yongdingmen Gate in the south of the city. A valuable photographic and historical record of places now much changed. Illustrated throughout with hundreds of images. Text in Chinese. Recommended.
