JOCSM2 Lord Jocelyn: SIX MONTHS WITH THE CHINESE EXPEDITION;. or, Leaves from a Soldier's Notebook. London, 1841. xiii, 155 pp. 2 foldout b/w plates. 18x12 cm. Original decorative gilt cloth. GBP 750.00 Written by the author on the return voyage from China (whilst events were still fresh in his memory) of his impressions of, and action in, the First Opium War between Britain and China. Includes the assault on Chusan and the expedition to the Pei-ho Estuary (near Tianjin) in 1840. This text is a very good read: relatively informative and even-handed. The two foldout plates are of particular delight and interest - one showing the course of the Great Wall down from the mountains to where it ends at the sea, the second recording a view of the Harbour of Chusan with the British Fleet. First edition in very good condition with some very slight foxing. Rare. Lust 560. Subjects: Opium War Foreigners in Asia Item 440 in List 211.
