JINSS1
Jin Liyan ed., Yamanaka Yuzuru consultant: SHANZHONG SHANGHUI JINGSHOU ZHONGGUO YISHUPIN ZILIAO HUIBIAN. (A Record of Chinese Art Objects Handled by Yamanaka & Co). 山中商會經手中國藝術品資料彙編。金立言 主編 山中讓 監製. Shanghai, 2020. 10, 1261 pp. Over 1100 illustrations, predominantly b/w. 4 vols. 29x24 cm. Cloth.
GBP 1,500.00
Large and weighty four-volume work which reproduces 15 catalogues produced for sale exhibitions and other exhibitions held by Yamanaka & Co. in Japan from 1923 to 1939 and which contained Chinese works of art. Yamanaka & Co. has become legendary due to the superb quality (and quantity!) of the Chinese objects they handled in the course of some 40 years. Many of these objects found their way into museums and private collections in Japan and America. A Yamanaka provenance adds huge cachet and value to any such object now auctioned or sold. The sourcing of some categories of objects by Yamanaka has now become contentious - particularly the archaeological objects and stone sculpture. Over 1100 illustrations show approximately 6000 Chinese art objects in various media - ceramics, ancient bronzes, sculpture, paintings, furniture, scholar's studio objects etc. An additional 100 b/w photographs show exhibition interiors, shop interiors etc. Three of the volumes reproduce the Yamanaka catalogues. The fourth shows additional related photographic material. Not all of the hundreds of items listed in the catalogues were illustrated, although complete listings of the items in each exhibition are given. Only illustrations with Chinese works of art are reproduced.
This work provides a valuable and fascinating insight into the activity of the world's pre-eminent dealer in Chinese art prior to the Second World War and also into the flow and trade of top-level Chinese art in the early 20th century.
Original Yamanaka catalogues are extremely difficult to find and very expensive when located. This is thus a valuable corpus of work.
Forewords, editor's notes, list of contents, translations of forewords to catalogues (plus some other texts in catalogues), essay and epilogue in English. Main texts in Chinese and Japanese.
Produced in a small edition which immediately went out-of-print and has since commanded very high prices in China - when a copy can be found.
Subjects: Ceramics Art
