Weighty two-volume work showing superb Chinese ceramics plus a few other items sourced in China and sold by the Japanese dealer, Yamanaka, in the first half of the 20th century. Volume One: Plates, Volume Two: Research Materials. The Plates volume illustrates 128 superb examples of Chinese ceramics dating from the Tang onwards through the Song, Ming and Qing to the Republic are illustrated. Also six Qing jades (5 from the Prince Kung collection), a pair of Qianlong zitan incense stands, a pair of Qianlong zitan armchairs and a Qing cloisonne altar set. The pieces are shown in full page colour with (in the majority of cases) an accompanying black-and-white illustration showing the item in a Yamanaka sale catalogue. The Research Materials volume shows numerous other ceramics and a number of jades (predominantly Qing) handled by Yamanaka. Also a number of Yamanaka-related black-and-white photographs.
Introductions, essays on the history of Yamanaka, its trade in objects sourced in China, the early collection and appreciation of ancient Chinese ceramics in Japan, the Baur collection and Tomita Kumasaku (who had worked for Yamanaka), plus other contributions. This work was produced to accompany an exhibition held by the Classy Society in Beijing in 2020.
Dual texts in Chinese, English and Japanese. Due to the interest in the company and the magic of a Yamanka provenance, this work went immediately out-of-print. We have managed to obtain a couple of copies.
