ZZHCX1 HUAPU CAI XIN. 畫譜采新。余經堂石印. Shanghai, 1886. 20x23 cm. Stitched. GBP 950.00 Appears to be the first published edition of this lithographic painting manual work. It comprises a variety of material, including Xihu Shiba Jing Tu (Eighteen Views of West Lake) with an 1886 date. There are also numerous other illustrations by some 15 artists (some well-known at the time) of birds-and-flowers and scenes from literature and legend. The title page has a cyclical date that mostly corresponds to 1885 but states 'Winter' so could also be 1886. An early lithographic painting manual considered of sufficient merit to be mentioned in Hay:' Painters and Publishers in Late Nineteenth-Century Shanghai' pp. 159 and 161, contained within Chou (ed.): 'Art at the Close of Empire'. Illustrated throughout. All text in Chinese. In decent condition for works of this genre. Some marks and chipping to covers. A few marks within but generally clean. Very rare.
