A magnificent publication on, and catalogue of, the Percival David Collection with fine colour plates and detailed descriptions, including translations of Chinese inscriptions on pieces (including some by the Qian Long emperor) plus an authoritative and scholarly text drawing much on Chinese sources. When Sir Percival David formed his collection of Chinese ceramics, his approach was governed to some extent by two important Chinese works on collecting: the Ko Ku Yao Lun (The Essential Criteria of Antiquities) written in 1388 by Cao Chao. David later translated and edited this work. The second book of influence was Chu Yan's Tao Shuo of 1774, translated by Bushell as: Description of Chinese Pottery and Porcelain. Thus, discerning buying, governed by the dictates of Chinese connoisseurship, distinguishes the David collection - with a marked accent on imperial taste. Indeed, the collection includes a number of exquisite and important Song pieces from the former Chinese imperial holdings in Peking. A collection renowned for its quality and for important pieces from the Song through to the Qing dynasties. One of the most beautifully-produced English books of the period. Rare.
