GBP 4,000.00
The contemporary female Chinese woodblock print artist, Guo Shuang, here provides an intimate insight into the rural experience of modern-day China. This artist's book literally goes back to her roots - her childhood in a small village in central Henan province. It contains illustration and description of twelve memorable events from her childhood, The black-and-white woodblock illustrations are done with her usual meticulous delicacy and fine attention to detail. The subject matter ranges from gathering edible roots and childhood accidents to races home and problems at the village school. It all seems idyllic and is probably an upbringing now lost to the rapidly-advancing China we now encounter. A heartfelt testament to a near-bygone and much simpler time. Contemporary Chinese social realism. All text in Chinese.
Limited edition of 30 sets. Individually numbered.
This first copy (1/30) is accompanied by the original pearwood woodblocks cut for the work. Each block bears an entire image.
A one-off opportunity to own the key material components of the process involved in the making of a contemporary artist's book by an accomplished Chinese print artist. It truly brings home the enormous amount of time and effort involved in creating such a work and gives many insights into the art and craft of woodblock printing.
