GUOFT1
Guo Shuang: FANGYANG DE TONGNIAN. (A Carefree Childhood). 放養的童年。郭雙 創刻. Henan, 2023. Woodcut title page plus 12 original black-and-white woodblock prints. 42x31 cm. Accordion-style. Folder.
GBP 1,500.00
The Chinese contemporary woodblock print artist, Guo Shuang, here provides an intimate insight into the rural experience of modern-day China. This artist's book literally goes back to her roots - a childhood in a small village in central Henan province. It contains illustration and description of twelve memorable events and activities. The black-and-white woodblock illustrations are done with her usual meticulous delicacy and fine attention to detail. The subject matter ranges from gathering edible roots and childhood accidents to races home and problems at the village school. Whilst poor, it all seems idyllic and is probably an upbringing now lost to the rapidly-advancing China we now encounter. A heartfelt testament to a near-bygone and much simpler time. Contemporary Chinese social realism. All text in Chinese.
Limited edition of 30 sets. Individually numbered.
English translation of the captions on all prints will be provided. Images upon request.
An online video of the making of the work is also available as per the following link:
