GONEC1 Gonick, Gloria: EARLY CARPETS AND TAPESTRIES ON THE EASTERN SILK ROAD. 2016. 172 pp. Colour illustrations throughout. 30x23 cm. Cloth. GBP 40.00 Discusses and illustrates a highly-interesting group of antique Chinese textiles used to decorate festival carts for Kyoto's midsummer Gion Matsuri Festival. Comprising 36 ink-painted wool tapestries and 21 wool-pile carpets, these rare textiles created over 500 years ago have remained largely unknown and poorly documented. The author's research identifies the carpets and tapestries with a group of Uighur weavers from the Ganzhou area of China's Gansu province. Amongst much else of interest, a number have Manichaean motifs and designs. A useful contribution, not least on Chinese wool tapestries and rugs.
