Weighty catalogue of a sophisticated exhibition at the Gugong in Beijing examining the art and culture surrounding the famous calligraphy 'Lanting Xu' composed and brushed by Wang Xizhi (321-379) at a gathering of literati in 353 AD. Regarded as the supreme example of Chinese calligraphy, it was reproduced in many versions over the centuries, engraved on stone from which rubbings were made, the gathering immortalised in paintings and other media. Many fine and early examples of the calligraphy are shown here together with numerous paintings, rubbings and associated items. Illustrated throughout in colour. Text in Chinese.
