Gugong Museum ed: PIRUO XIANGSHAN: JIANTUOLUO YISHU ZHAN. Gandhara Heritage along the Silk Road: A Pakistan-China Joint Exhibition. 譬若香山:犍陀羅藝術展. Beijing, 2023. 483 pp. Full page colour plates throughout. Colour and b/w text plates. 38x26 cm. Wrappers.
GBP 250.00
Large and weighty catalogue of a marvellous exhibition held at the Gugong Palace Museum in Beijing showing Gandharan sculpture. 173 items loaned from seven major museums in Pakistan and 30 from the Gugong Museum collection. The largest such exhibition ever held in China and showing many superb pieces, including full length statues and complex sculptural reliefs. Also included were brass sculptures and other stone carvings. The exhibits date from the 2nd century BC through to the 10th century AD and fully demonstrate the diversity and artistry of the Gandharan culture. Near dual texts in Chinese and English including essays and detailed descriptions of the 203 exhibits. An excellent addition to the somewhat sparse literature on the subject. This catalogue has proved hard to obtain as much of the print run was retained for official presentation.
Subjects: Sculpture Gandhara
