Large catalogue of an excellent exhibition held at the Gugong Palace Museum in Beijing in 2020 in collaboration with the Jingdezhen Archaeological Research Institute of Ceramics. The exhibition showed ceramics from reigns throughout the Ming dynasty comparing and juxtaposing excavated material from Jingdezhen with superb perfect examples from the Gugong collections. A total of 197 exhibits.
The exhibition shed further light on the commissioning of, and designs for, porcelains undertaken within the Forbidden City, the production processes and quality control at the Jingdezhen imperial kilns and thus the strict standards for selecting ceramics for the imperial court. Also the process and handling of discarded, damaged and unsatisfactory specimens.
The exhibition in three sections. 1. Blue and Red: Blue and White Porcelain, Underglaze Red Porcelain, and Underglaze Blue and Red Porcelain; 2. Richness of Colour: Porcelain with Coloured Glazes; 3. Colourfulness: Polychrome Porcelain.
Includes ceramics never previously exhibited, together with newly-excavated finds from Jingdezhen. Also supplements and complements previous exhibitions in this wonderful and comprehensive series on imperial MIng ceramics.
All examples illustrated in excellent full page colour plates and in multiple views, including bases and basemarks. Prefaces, lists of contents, lists of plates, brief abstracts to essays and captions to plates in English. Main text in Chinese. Recommended.
