Catalogue of an exhibition jointly organized and held by the Guangdong and Gansu Provincial Museums. The exhibition compared and contrasted the very different Silk Road trade of north-west China with that of the Maritime Silk Road trade of southern China. Whilst the northern Silk Road trade went into slow decline after the Tang, the southern Silk Road continued for much longer and became the export trade routes that served the West in the 18th and 19th centuries. The exhibition had many varied and diverse exhibits showing the differences in the two trading areas. Many ancient artifacts from the Gansu Museum are shown together with Han dynasty artifacts from the Nanyue Kingdom of southern China and ceramics and other objects extending through the ages to the 19th century. Illustrated throughout in colour. Text in Chinese.
