ELLJP4 Ellis, Henry: JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE LATE EMBASSY TO CHINA. Comprising a Correct Narrative of the Public Transactions of the Embassy, of the Voyage to and from China, and of the Journey from the Mouth of the Pei-ho to the Return to Canton.. London, 1818. xii, 442; vii, 359 pp. Engraved frontispiece of Lord Amherst and 2 b/w engraved folding maps. 2 vols. 22x14 cm. Full leather. Gilt to spine. GBP 250.00 Second edition. The official account of the second British Embassy to China in 1816 led by Lord Amherst and written by Henry Ellis (1777-1855) in his capacity as Third Commissioner. The object of the mission, generally regarded as a failure, was to secure better treatment for British merchants engaged in the China trade. Having proceeded to Peking and been granted an audience with the Jiaqing Emperor, Amherst refused to kowtow and was instantly dismissed. To add insult to injury, their ship, the Alceste, was shipwrecked on the way home. Also present was Staunton the younger, who had accompanied his father on the first British embassy as official page to Lord Macartney. The lively narrative includes an interview with Napoleon on St. Helena, and other valuable additions to John McLeod's record of the Embassy. The two folding engraved maps are entitled: 'Map of the Route of the British Embassy from the Mouth of the Peiho River to Pekin and from thence to Canton in the Year 1816'. This good map of China measures 55x42 cm and is in very good condition. Generally clean with minor foxing and a couple of slight marginal tears and creasing. The second map is: 'Map of the Route of the British Embassy Upon the River Yang-Tse-Kiang from Kwa Choo to Nan-Chang-Foo'. This map measures 21x27 cm. Foxing. Sone foxing and soiling to preliminaries. Text generally clean. Front cover to volume 1 detached - but repairable. Otherwise both volumes good and firm. Reading copy. Priced accordingly.
