ZZCGJ1 CHENGDE GU JIANZHU. (The Ancient Architecture of Chengde). 承德古建築. Beijing, 1982. 329 pp. Over 400 colour illustrations and architectural drawings. 37x26 cm. Cloth. GBP 125.00 The Mountain Resort at Chengde, formerly known as Jehol, was where the Qing emperors went to avoid the summer heat of Beijing. This book also discusses the 11 monasteries, in combined Tibetan-Han style, in the hills surrounding the imperial complex. Despite the fame of the place and the outstanding merit of its architecture and gardens, relatively little of a comprehensive nature has been published. This is one of the few exceptions to the rule and is particularly noteworthy for the excellent architectural drawings and detailed colour photography. Text in Chinese. A scarce work.
