Zhao Ronghua: CIBANHUA ZHENSHANG. (An Appreciation of Painting on Ceramic Plaques). Shanghai, 1999. 248 pp. c. 250 colour plates. 29x22 cm. Boards.
An excellent publication that hugely improves our scanty knowledge of this subject - painting on porcelain plaques during the Qing and, in particular, the Republic period when this ceramic art form flourished. The Republic period was one of the few times in Chinese ceramic history when the artists signed their work. Whilst a number of the ceramic artists are already known, the work of many is here shown for the first time. The book has excellent colour plates and is in Chinese with a good informative text. To assist with accessing this work and to help discover the large number of ceramic artists whose work is depicted, an English translation is provided of the captions of the 215 ceramic plaques illustrated. Main text in Chinese.
