An excellent black-and-white photographic survey of the cities of Tianjin and Peking taken at the beginning of the 20th century by the Japanese photographer, Yamamoto. There are numerous photographs of the city of Tianjin, its architecture, foreign concessions, life along the bund and river wharves. Also some photography of places near Tianjin, such as Shanhaiguan and Qinhuangdao. There is also much photography of Peking including a good selection of photographs of the foreign legations and Legation Street. In addition, there are the main buildings and sights of Peking, many looking very shabby and neglected. There is also a good selection of photographs showing people engaged in various professions and activities plus photographs of the area around Peking. Many of the photographic plates are fullpage. This is the best photographic survey of the period that we have seen of Tianjin and the Peking photography is also notable. Captions in Japanese and English.
