Yang Tingzhuo & Pan Shenghi ed: BAI MIAO TU CHAOBEN HUIBIAN. Aboriginal Peoples of Guizhou Province in Pictures. Guiyang, 2004. 617 pp. Colour plates throughout both volumes, many full page. 2 vols. 29x21 cm. Boards.
Very useful and well-illustrated two-volume study of the genre of Qing dynasty Chinese painted albums known as 'Miao albums' showing minority peoples, primarily of Guizhou province in southwest China where the Miao people predominantly live. Well-illustrated throughout showing many examples of paintings from such albums. This work is notable for the detailed descriptions and accompanying texts discussing the paintings and the genre. Illustrated throughout in colour. Text in Chinese. A good research reference on this still little-studied aspect of Chinese painting. A very scarce work by a regional Chineses publisher. The first time we have seen it.
