Xueyou Tushu She ed: QIXIANG GUATU: TUJIE SHUOMING. (Posters about the Weather: Illustrated and with Explanations). Shanghai, n.d. (1950s). Set of six colour posters each with a number of illustrations and explanatory text. 6 vols. 76x52 cm. Loose.
Set of six Chinese educational posters about the weather. Aimed at a school audience as a couple of the posters show children performing simple experiments that demonstrate how the weather works. The posters are accompanied by a good level of detail so one can therefore assume that the posters were produced for children at middle school level. Rare graphic design and iconography from the start of the Communist period in China. Interesting imagery that is slightly naive and distinctive of that time. Edited by the Xueyou Tushu She (The Society of Illustration for the Friends of Study) and published by the Shijie Yutu Xueshe (World Map Study Society).
Accompanied by the original envelope that has separated into its constituent front and back parts and with much wear, tear and loss. The envelope shows that this set was produced in the early-mid 1950s before the revaluation in 1955 of 10,000 yuan down to one yuan as the price of the set is stated as being 26,000 yuan! The posters themselves in fine condition. All text in Chinese. A very rare survival and the first time we have handled such a set. Images available on request.
