Xu Bing: • [ ] •. (The Book from the Ground). Guilin, 2012. 112 pp. Colour and b/w symbols throughout. 21x15 cm. Boards.
A 'day-in-the-life' story understandable by all people with an urban or educated background, whatever their native tongue and script, being depicted in the universal language of symbols - yet possibly a story that is slightly different to all readers in terms of individual interpretation of the meaning of the symbols. The artist and author, Xu Bing, was made famous for his Tianshu or 'Book from the Sky'. This was a book entirely composed of characters that cannot be read, whereas here is a book that anyone can 'read', containing neither characters nor words. The latest result of Xu Bing's continuing and fascinating exploration of the written form and semiotics.
