WEI WEI DA GUAN: BAI CHOU TUSHUO. (A Splendid Sight: Illustrations of 100 Idiots). Shanghai, 1943. 200 pp. 100 full page b/w illustrations. 12x13 cm. Stitched, new brocade case.
A fun publication published in Shanghai presumably with the intention to raise the spirits and amuse during a difficult time. One hundred idiots, fools and buffoons are illustrated, each with an accompanying page of text explaining and detailing their stupidity. The lithograph-style illustrations from drawings by Zhang Qin and Xin Gong. It is unclear who wrote the texts. Published by the Xin Zhongguo Baoshe of whom we had not heard before. Ink inscription of the title on the otherwise plain front cover stating that it was was written and signed by the famous Peking opera star, Mei Lanfang - well maybe. Wear and tear and slight loss to edges of covers and the first few pages. Some foxing throughout. Very rare. The first time we have seen this work.
