TIAN GONG FACANG: LIAO QINGZHOU TA TIANGONG CHUTU WENWU JINGHUA. (Hidden Buddhist Treasures in a Heavenly Palace: Cultural Artefacts Excavated from the Liao Dynasty Pagoda at Qingzhou). Beijing, 2017. 225 pp. Full page colour plates throughout. 1 foldout. Colour text illustrations. 29x21 cm. Boards.
The first comprehensive report of the extraordinary Buddhist artefacts found in 1989 in a hidden crypt (Heavenly Palace) in the Liao dynasty Buddhist pagoda at the ancient ruins of the city of Qingzhou near Chifeng in Inner Mongolia. The sealing of the crypt can be dated very precisely to c.1050 AD due to dates on some of the artefacts. The prime find was a superb 44 cm high painted wooden Buddhist reliquary in the shape of a pagoda with much gold applique, including Buddhist figures. However, of equal importance, were the extensive finds of very fine and very rare Liao dynasty textiles. Other excavated artefacts of equal interest. Illustrated throughout. Text in Chinese.
