Toledo Museum of Art: FRESH IMPRESSIONS. Early Modern Japanese Prints. Seattle, 2014. 348 pp. Colour plates throughout. 2 foldouts. 31x26 cm. Cloth.
Catalogue of a great exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art recreating the exhibition of modern Japanese prints held at the same museum in 1930. The 1930 exhibition was then at the cutting edge of the 'shin hanga (new print) movement and was a watershed in the success of the movement. This catalogue reproduces all 343 prints from the 1930 exhibition which showed the striking work of 10 shin hanga artists, including Hasiguchi Goyo, Kawase Hasui and Hiroshi Yoshida. Detailed essays and descriptions accompany. A bargain at the price. Recommended but now sadly out-of-print and hard to find.
