Tang Cailan ed: QIDAN YIZHEN: QIDAN BOWUGUAN GUANCANG ZHENPIN XUAN: JINYINQI TONGQI YUQI JUAN. (Treasures of the Qidan: A Selection of Gold and Silver, Bronzes and Jades from the Qidan Museum Collection). Beijing, 2011. 265 pp. Colour plates throughout. 29x22 cm. Boards.
The rather elusive Balinzuo Banner Qidan Museum is located in Inner Mongolia and has an exceptional collection of material relating to the Qidan/Khitan culture who, from the 10th-12th centuries AD, ruled northern China as the Liao dynasty. The large majority of the objects shown are excavated from Liao dynasty tombs and include much gold, gold-plate or silver. Also shows small jades, bronzes and painted wooden panels and a very unusual belt with small glass plaques. There is also some earlier material. Divided into sections: Objects Depicting the Human Figure; Belts: Jewellery; Horse Trappings; Bronze Mirrors; Utensils and Containers. Illustrated throughout in colour. Includes much unpublished material. Text in Chinese. Bump to top right-hand corner of cover. Internally fine. Out-of-print and we have only managed to obtain two copies.
