The 70 black-and-white collotype plates are on crepe paper, a genre popular in Japan at the end of the 19th century. Each full page illustration has a title in English below and a few plates also have some descriptive text. The subject range from 'Cloth Dealer's Shop', 'Entertaining a Guest' and 'A Vegetable Dealer' to 'Picking Tea', 'Children at Meals' and 'Maple Garden at Takinogawa'. There are numerous variants of this work 'Illustrations of Japanese Life' but we have never seen this one before. Some wear and fading to covers and the occasional crease within but, generally, in good condition.
