Tie Yuan ed: JIANGXI CANG CI QUANJI: MINGUO (SHANG XIA). The Complete Collection of Porcelain of Jiangxi Province: Porcelain from the Year 1912-1949. Beijing, 2008. 248; 248 pp. Colour plates throughout. 2 vols. 29x22 cm. Boards.
An excellent two-volume work on Republican period Chinese ceramics from collections in China's Jiangxi province - primarily the important Jingdezhen Ceramics Museum and the Jiangxi Provincial Museum, but also a good number of pieces from smaller collections. Volume One shows the work of the Eight Friends of Zhushan, other ceramic artists active during the period and pieces with hallmarks and other base inscriptions. The second volume is of much use as it shows nearly 200 pieces of Republican porcelain that imitate Qing dynasty porcelain, many with Qing dynasty basemarks. This is the first publication to show such a large and varied selection of these pieces and is of much importance for research into this problematic area of Chinese ceramics. A total of 372 fine pieces are illustrated in full colour with basemarks also shown. Some examples shown in multiple views. Captions to plates in English, main text in Chinese. Recommended.
