Soothill, William E: THE HALL OF LIGHT. A Study of Early Chinese Kingship. London, 1951. xxii, 289 pp. 22x14 cm. Cloth.
Soothill's last work, edited posthumously by his daughter, Lady Hosie. The book is an examination of Chinese traditions concerning the ancient Chinese institution known as Ming Tang - the Hall of Light - and the sacrificial rituals connected with it. Soothill realised the Ming Tang has an essentially astronomical character and was closely connected with the determination of the calendar which was, from the earliest times in China, closely regarded as a prerogative and function of royalty. Scarce. Loose paper insert with dedication and signature of Dorothea Hosie.
