Qi Jinzhu: MAN HAN QUAN TI: GONGTING CAI DE CHUANCHENG YU FAZHAN. Manchu and Han Banquet: The Inheritance and Innovation of Palace Dishes. Beijing, 2017. 377 pp. Colour plates throughout, many full page. 38x27 cm. Cloth.
Highly-interesting and well-illustrated study of the imperial culinary and banquet culture of the Manchu Qing emperors within the Forbidden City in Beijing. In two parts. The first part examines the culture, etiquette and presentation of food at imperial banquets. The second part continues the theme of the presentation and display of food, showing many examples of palace cuisine exquisitely presented on fine ceramics. This second section is of much further fascination as, in addition to the illustration, the recipes are given. The result of much research in the Gugong Palace Museum archives. The illustrations based on the Forbidden City collections. All text in Chinese. A large and very well-produced volume. Gives much context and depth to the study and use of ceramics in the Chinese imperial court. Hard to obtain.
