Oxenham, E. L: HISTORICAL ATLAS OF THE CHINESE EMPIRE. From the Earliest Times to the Late Ching Dynasty Giving the Names of the Chief Towns and the Metropolis of each of the Chief Dynasties of China. Peiping, 1937. v, 22 pp. with 5 pp. of text and 22 fullpage maps. Index. 30x45 cm. Paper.
The title page notes that the author, Oxenham, was "late H.B.M. Consul at Chinkiang" and this is a "Special Limited Edition / Giving only the Maps in English." The Prefatory Note states that this edition, prepared by Mr. W. Sheldon Ridge of the College of Chinese Studies, Peiping, reproduces only part of an original work that "was published in Shanghai as long ago as 1887". The original edition had only maps in Chinese but a second edition, published after Oxenham's demise, had Chinese maps opposite English (romanized) versions. Ridge says that nothing with more detail had been published since. He updates romanizations and reprints Oxenham's original preface.
We have never previously handled this, or any of the previous editions. A fine item in good condition. One map - During the Han Dynasty - has neat, scholarly pen and pencil annotation. Rare.
