A wonderful exhibition held by the National Palace Museum in Taipei to commemorate the millennium. The exhibition looks back 1000 years to the Song dynasty in power at the start of the second millennium when Chinese art reached a pinnacle of sophistication. The exhibition is split into five sections: The Tao and Art, Nature as Teacher, The Beauty of Simplicity, Life and Art, Cultural Synthesis. Drawing on its stunning holdings of Song dynasty art, all from the former Chinese imperial collection, 189 objects are displayed - primarily calligraphy, paintings and ceramics but also bronzes, books, jades, lacquer etc. Introductions and captions in English, otherwise Chinese only. An exhibition that truly shows the artistic achievements of the Song. Recommended. Now out-of-print.
